Information adapted from the College of Optometrists

Hay fever is more than just sneezing and sniffles - it affects over 16 million people in the UK, causing red, itchy, and swollen eyes during peak pollen season. If you’re one of the many who suffer from seasonal allergies, taking steps to protect your eyes is essential for maintaining comfort and clarity. Here's how to manage hay fever symptoms effectively, especially when it comes to your eye health.

Avoid Pollen Exposure

Minimising your contact with pollen is key. Keep windows closed, especially during midmorning and early evening when the pollen count is at its highest. Use a damp duster to clean surfaces and prevent pollen from settling indoors.

Eye Protection Outdoors

Wearing wraparound sunglasses when outside helps block pollen from reaching your eyes. If you normally wear contact lenses, consider switching to spectacles during hay fever season to reduce irritation.

Soothe and Rinse

Use a dedicated eye wash to rinse away pollen and dust regularly. Applying a cold compress or using chilled dry eye drops can provide temporary relief and reduce inflammation.

Choose the Right Eye Drops

The College of Optometrists recommends two main types of anti-allergy eye drops:

  • Mast Cell Stabilisers: These are ideal if you know your hay fever triggers. They help prevent symptoms before they begin.

  • Antihistamine Eye Drops: These offer quick relief when symptoms occur, though they don’t prevent the reaction.

Both types are available by prescription or over the counter from your local optometrist or pharmacy.
