The New UK Eyesight Legislation: Will You Need an Eye Test to Renew Your Driving Licence?

The UK is currently reviewing eyesight legislation for drivers, which could soon make regular eye tests part of driving licence renewal — especially for older motorists. Concerns have grown after an inquest found several fatal road accidents involved drivers whose vision fell far below the legal driving eyesight standards, yet they continued driving because the UK system relies on self-reporting eyesight issues.

Under the proposed new eyesight driving laws, drivers aged 70 and over may be required to take a compulsory eyesight test every time they renew their licence — currently every three years. These changes are expected to be included in the government’s upcoming road safety strategy.

Right now, the rules are simple: older drivers must complete a form confirming they meet the DVLA eyesight requirements — such as being able to read a number plate from 20 metres, with glasses or contact lenses if necessary. But no professional vision check is required. Many eye-care experts argue this approach is outdated and puts everyone on the road at risk.

Vision can deteriorate gradually with age due to conditions like cataracts or glaucoma. Regular eye tests could detect these issues early, protecting both driving safety and long-term eye health. Supporters say mandatory checks would help ensure every driver has the clear and safe vision needed to react to hazards on the road.

For drivers below 70, no changes are confirmed yet — but some professionals are urging the government to extend eyesight legislation to apply to all licence renewal cycles in the future, not only for older drivers.

While we wait for the final announcement, one thing is clear: keeping your eyesight up to date is essential if you want to stay safe and stay behind the wheel. If you rely on glasses or contact lenses for driving, now is a great time to book an eye test and ensure you meet the latest UK driving eyesight requirements — before any new legislation arrives.
