30 Years of Seeing Things Differently: How Eyewear Has Changed Since 1996
Updated: 7 hours ago

In 1996, The Spectacle Factory opened its doors for the very first time.
Thirty years later, we're still going from strength to strength – but the world of eyewear around us looks remarkably different.
Over the past three decades, we've seen extraordinary changes in the way glasses are designed, the technology used to examine our eyes, the lenses we wear and even the role eyewear plays in our everyday lives.
Glasses are no longer simply something you wear because you need to see better. They can be fashion, technology, protection, performance and an expression of who you are.
As we continue celebrating our 30th anniversary, we thought we'd look back at just how much has changed since 1996 – and where eyewear might be heading next.
From Necessity to Personality
Think back to eyewear in the 1990s.
For many people, buying glasses was primarily a practical decision. You had your eyes tested, chose a frame, selected your lenses and went home with something that helped you see.
Of course, fashionable eyewear existed, but the sheer amount of choice available today would have been difficult to imagine.
Fast-forward to 2026 and we now travel the world looking for interesting eyewear to bring back to our customers.
Our collection includes everything from understated, beautifully engineered frames to bold independent designs, luxury eyewear and pieces that could almost be considered wearable art.
More importantly, we've watched people's attitudes towards their glasses change.
Today, many of our customers don't want their glasses to disappear.
They want them to say something.
One Pair? How About an Eyewear Wardrobe?
Thirty years ago, owning one everyday pair of prescription glasses was completely normal.
Today, we're increasingly creating eyewear wardrobes for our customers.
You might have a sophisticated pair for work, something colourful for the weekend, prescription sunglasses for holidays, specialist lenses for driving, sports eyewear for the golf course and a completely outrageous pair simply because they make you smile.
Some of our customers now own numerous pairs, each designed for a different purpose, outfit, environment or mood.
We've even welcomed customers from around the world who travel to Lancashire specifically to build their eyewear wardrobes with us.
Your glasses don't have to be the same every day – because neither are you.
From an Eye Test to an Incredible Map of Your Vision
Perhaps some of the biggest changes we've witnessed have happened behind the scenes.
Eye examinations have become extraordinarily sophisticated.
Today, our ZEISS i.Profiler® plus uses wavefront technology to analyse more than 1,500 points across the eye, allowing us to identify tiny visual irregularities and create an incredibly detailed understanding of someone's vision.
We also use advanced OCT scanning to create detailed 3D images of structures including the retina and optic nerve, helping us monitor the long-term health of our customers' eyes.
The aim is no longer simply: "Can you read the letters on the chart?"
It's about understanding how your eyes perform in the real world – when you're driving at night, working on screens, moving between distances or dealing with difficult lighting conditions.
Thirty years of technological progress means we can understand your eyes in ways that simply weren't possible when we opened in 1996.
From Measurements to Millions of Data Points
The way we measure glasses has changed enormously too.
Traditionally, an optician would take a series of manual measurements to determine how your lenses should sit in front of your eyes.
We still believe the expertise of the person fitting your glasses is incredibly important – but today, we can combine that expertise with some remarkable technology.
Our ZEISS VisuFit 1000 creates a 3D representation and captures more than 45 million data points, allowing us to position lenses with incredible precision.
Why does that matter?
Because even the most advanced lens in the world needs to be positioned correctly.
It's a perfect example of how optical care has evolved: technology hasn't replaced personal expertise. It's given us even better tools with which to use it.
Lenses Have Become Personal Too
If frames have become more exciting over the past 30 years, lenses have undergone an equally impressive transformation.
Today's lenses can be designed around your prescription, lifestyle, frame choice and the way you use your eyes.
We can create lenses specifically for driving, sport, computer use or complex prescriptions.
We can use technologies designed to improve visual comfort, contrast and performance in
different conditions.
But we've also watched something else happen.
The lens itself has become part of the design.
Colourful gradients, photochromic technology, flashes and mirrors can completely transform a pair of glasses.
A beautiful frame is only the beginning.
We've become particularly known for combining unusual frames with completely bespoke lens designs – sometimes experimenting with colours and combinations to create something our customer simply couldn't pick from a shelf.
It's one of the reasons people now travel from around the world to visit us.
From Local Optician to Global Eyewear Community
This might be one of the changes we're proudest of.
When The Spectacle Factory opened in 1996, we were a local independent optician serving our community.
We still are.
But that community has become considerably bigger.
Technology, social media and online consultations have allowed us to meet eyewear enthusiasts from across the UK and around the world.
People watch our videos, discover a frame or lens combination they love and get in touch with us – sometimes from thousands of miles away.
Some visit us in person, while others begin their eyewear journey through a virtual consultation.
For those travelling to see us, we've even developed our experience around the journey itself, including helping arrange accommodation and covering an overnight hotel stay for qualifying purchases over £600.
Our little corner of Lancashire has become an eyewear destination.
We don't think anyone standing in the practice in 1996 could have predicted that.
And Now… Your Glasses Can Be Smart
Perhaps nothing demonstrates how far eyewear has come quite like smart glasses.
We're now at a point where glasses can do far more than correct your vision or protect your eyes from the sun.
Smart eyewear such as Even Realities can bring digital information directly into your field of view, with features such as live transcription and navigation integrated into a pair of glasses that still looks and feels like eyewear.
The line between optical technology and consumer technology is beginning to disappear.
And that raises an exciting question:
What will glasses be capable of in another 30 years?
Some Things Haven't Changed
Over the past 30 years, eyewear has evolved beyond anything we could have imagined in 1996. Technology has transformed the way we examine eyes, lenses have become more sophisticated, and the possibilities for personalising glasses are almost endless.
But through all that change, some things have remained exactly the same.
Our passion for eyewear, our commitment to exceptional customer service and our belief that every customer deserves an experience as individual as they are.
We've never believed that choosing glasses should simply be about picking a frame from a shelf. It's about understanding the person behind the prescription, discovering what matters to them and creating something that genuinely enhances their everyday life.
A huge part of that is education.
We're passionate about sharing our knowledge, whether that's explaining the latest advancements in lens technology, helping customers understand their eye health or demonstrating how different frames and lenses can transform their vision.
Through our in-store consultations, educational videos, social media and YouTube channel, we've made it our mission to make expert optical knowledge more accessible, empowering people to make informed, confident decisions about their eyewear and eye health.
We don't just want our customers to leave with a fantastic pair of glasses. We want them to understand why those glasses are right for them.
And while we're incredibly proud of our technology, it's our people who bring everything together. Taking the time to listen, offering honest advice, paying attention to the smallest details and going above and beyond are all part of the experience we strive to deliver.
Thirty years on, our enthusiasm for discovering exceptional eyewear is stronger than ever.
We're constantly searching for new designers, exploring innovative technologies and challenging what's possible with bespoke lenses.
Because for us, eyewear has never been just a product. It's our passion.
And that passion is something we'll carry into the next 30 years.
Here's to the Next 30 Years
We might not know exactly what eyewear will look like in 2056, but one thing is certain: we'll never stop exploring, learning and pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
We'll continue embracing new technology, discovering extraordinary eyewear and sharing our expertise with customers around the world.
But above all, we'll continue putting people first, delivering exceptional service and creating eyewear that's truly personalised to the individual.
The technology will keep changing. The possibilities will keep growing. But our passion for eyewear and the people who wear it will always remain.
Here's to the next 30 years of seeing things differently.
Eyewear for the Individual.
