Whilst Zeiss may be a globally recognised brand name, alongside such others as Nikon and Leica, few people other than photography enthusiasts have heard of Hoya.
Nevertheless, Hoya are a very well respected name in the world of glasses, synonymous with optical excellence, with a rich history in global vision care.
“Hoya Corporation was founded in 1941 in the city of Hoya, Tokyo, by two visionary brothers: Shoichi and Shigeru Yamanaka.”
Hoya over the last decade have acquired Seiko’s lens division as well as the famous lens brand Pentax. The latter is particularly relevant to Hoya’s ability to provide the best value prescription lenses on the market in 2024.
What are the key features of Hoya lenses?
1 - The best coatings in the world
No matter what someone is spending on their glasses, in my experience they want them to be hassle-free. That means easy to clean, free from scratches, no annoying reflections and not constantly fogging up. With Hoya lenses, all of these features come as standard, even with their least expensive lenses.
2 – Durability to the extreme
Likewise, good value products inherently need to be long lasting. Hoya were one of the big innovators in Trivex lens material, or PNX as they call it. All you need to know about Trivex is that it is virtually unbreakable, optically very clear, and the lightest lens material available. All Hoya lenses can be ordered in Trivex, and it isn’t an expensive option either.
3 – Easy to adjust to
While other lens manufacturers may claim to be better, few have as high wearer adaptation as Hoya. There are many, many people who will swear they can only wear Hoya lenses. Most of their lens designs are relatively simplistic, but they work.
There are some drawbacks, too. Hoya lenses have nowhere near the extent of tinting options offered by Zeiss, and they don’t have quite the best clarity like Zeiss do either. But those aspects aren’t as important to some people, so if you want straightforward lenses that give you comfortable vision, whilst being extremely reliable and great value, then Hoya might be the perfect lens brand for you.
Hoya/Pentax lenses start from £59 for single vision and £99 for varifocals/progressives.
