OCT stands for Optical Coherence Tomography. It is an advanced scan we use here at The Spectacle Factory due to its accuracy and precision, we use this machine as part of our pre-screening service. The OCT machine plays an invaluable role when screening the health of the back of your eyes and the cross sectional layers in between (a bit like slicing a cake!) The biggest advantage of an OCT scan compared to traditional imaging methods is its ability to show change over time. By comparing OCT scans from different visits, your optometrist can detect even subtle signs of disease progression such as Glaucoma, Macular degeneration, and Retinal detachment significantly earlier.
How an OCT scan works
If you've never had an OCT scan before, you might wonder what to expect. The good news is an OCT scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive. An OCT scan works in a similar way to how an ultrasound scan uses sound waves; an OCT scan uses light waves to create a 3D image of your eye. You will be asked to sit in front of a small machine with your chin on a rest and forehead up to the bar. The machine will scan both of your eyes, without touching them, one at a time and only takes a few minutes to complete. Once completed, the scans are sent through to the Optometrist and they will review the results with you while you're having your eye examination.
Who should have an OCT scan?
Everybody! We recommend having an OCT scan done as regularly as every 2 years coinciding with your eye exams for low-risk groups. For higher risk groups where there is glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetes in a close relative, then an annual scan would be advisable.
