An insight into the many different photocromic lenses that include the leading brand ‘Transitions’.
There are many different names for ‘photochromic’ lenses – that is, lenses which darken or clear in response to changing light conditions. People ask for ‘reactolight’s’ ‘sunsensors’ ‘transitions’ and most would assume that they are all the same thing. But actually, there are many different types of photochromic lenses, (Transitions being the leading brand), and they all work differently.
So whether they work for you is all about finding the one that suits you the best.
For example, Zeiss make a type of photchromic called ‘PhotoFusion’ which is extremely fast to clear compared to others (about 50% quicker), but doesn’t go quite as dark as some do, so someone who is very light sensitive and wants to wear them for long periods outdoors might struggle in bright light. However, for someone who is going inside and outside frequently, they would be perfect. You can read more about PhotoFusion here.
Another example of this is Transitions Xtractive lenses. They are different than any other photochromic lenses as they are the only ones that darken inside a car and go back to virtually clear indoors. You’d expect your photochromic lenses to work when driving, so if they don’t you could be very disappointed…

What’s the best type of photochromic lens?
I get asked this a lot, and as I say they are all a bit different… so there isn’t a definitive best, but the most advanced kind is called Transitions Vantage. Vantage is the first type of lens that not only darkens in reaction to light but also becomes polarised as it does. This makes a massive difference to your clarity of vision in bright light, as this video explains:
